Some dental procedures consist of several components, each of which may have its own charge but are essentially part of the same procedure. Unbundling occurs when a dentist bills for the cost of each individual component instead of for the procedure itself. This can lead to the cumulative charge of the components being greater than what the dentist would normally charge for the full procedure, resulting in higher costs. It is important to obtain a pre-treatment estimate and compare it against the actual bill to identify if this practice has occurred.
