Problems with Fillings

Fillings that fall out need to be replaced to avoid pain, sensitivity, tooth decay, and to keep the tooth from moving. If the filling came out because the tooth has broken, other treatments may be necessary. Hospital emergency departments and urgent care facilities are not generally equipped to treat this type of dental problem.

What to do

  • Call your dentist for an appointment. They will tell you how quickly you should come in.
  • While you wait for your appointment:
    • Use an over-the-counter temporary dental filling or orthodontic wax to seal the area where the filling came out.
    • Avoid using that tooth as much as possible.
    • Brush very lightly, or use only an oral rinse in that area.
    • Avoid any hard or sticky foods.
