Tooth Is Chipped or Cracked
A chip or crack that extends to the tooth's nerve can be very painful. Chipped and cracked teeth are different conditions that require different evaluations and treatments.
What to do
- Call your dentist and let them know what happened. If you have swelling or numbness, it's important to tell your dentist as it may indicate greater problems. Typically, you will get an urgent care appointment for an evaluation and any necessary treatment, but if your symptoms rapidly worsen, get immediate medical attention.
- Avoid using the tooth for chewing or biting.
- Avoid hard or sticky foods, which may further damage the tooth.
- If you are experiencing pain, ask for your dentist's advice on pain management strategies that you can use prior to your appointment.
