Trauma to the Head, Face, or Neck

Serious trauma to the head, face, or neck can have health implications far beyond your teeth and mouth. Your brain, jaws and facial bones, eyesight, throat, and glands can all be affected.

What to do

• For serious trauma to the head, face or neck, get immediate medical attention, or call 911 for a more rapid response.
• Once the condition has been evaluated and stabilized, make sure your doctor and dentist communicate about dental treatments you may need.
• If a direct impact to your mouth knocks out, moves, chips, or cracks a tooth without causing any other facial, head or neck impact, it may not require a visit to an emergency room or urgent care center. If any dental injuries occur, you should immediately contact your dentist, and ask about the steps you should take.
